The Sweet Spot

3507 Evanston Ave North
http://www.sweetspotseattle.com/

Artist: FC Nelson

The Sweet Spot is excited to welcome artist, F.C. Nelson, to the studio. We’ve coveted our own special piece from him that has been hanging on our wall for some time now and are looking forward to sharing what else he’s been working on.

F.C. has a full time ‘day job’, so he tells us that most of his painting happens at night in his garage where it’s cool. Because of this the paint tends to dry very slowly, which adds to the visual and visceral texture of his pieces:

“Most of these canvases have many layers of paint. They start simply enough, with big shapes in a basic color. Then there is overpainting with more specific forms. One thing leads to another. One bit of paint in one place inevitably requires another bit in another place, and so on. After a time, if it is going good, the painting itself seems to direct what to do next. After more time, if it’s going really good, the painting seems to get a presence of its own.  Then it’s done.”

This incredible artwork won’t let you stop pondering and attempting to decipher it, almost like a journey itself where you stop and look at where it’s been, what it might be, and where it’s going.

I believe that art brings balance and harmony to our lives, much in the same way that a walk in the woods or a stroll on the beach might. I really love the process of painting with encaustics. It is so fun to paint with molten, pigmented wax, build the layers, and watch how it changes as it cools. The finished paintings have a rich texture and depth with a durable surface.
I hope that my art provides an outlet, a mini vacation, for those who venture inside.
My goal is to create objects that are enjoyable to look at, and peaceful when understood.
Enjoy the Art Walk, hope you come by for a visit.

I’ve been serious about photography since 2005. Although I love looking at the world around me through my camera, my first serious collection was that of an unusual look at flowers. In 2010, I started compounding photos in Photoshop to explore the space between land and water. I’ve expanded this work, transforming representational photos into abstractions. All images are for sale.
