Anderson's paintings juxtapose traditional themes with contemporary issues; women's rights, sexual orientation and the environment, painted in an arresting realistic style.  In addition to the Nov. 4th art walk, this exhibit is open during Fremont Sunday market and by appointment.

Britt Rynearson designs bold, original textiles and clothing in both wall hanging and wearable forms.  Her rich background as a textile artist, modern aesthetic, and training in the Japanese art of Arashi shibori has garnered her work considerable attention; Rynearson has had work exhibited at the Smithsonian and the Philadelphia Museum,  has been featured regularly in national art and craft publications, and her designs are carried by boutiques nationwide.  Influential training came from: a fine art degree from Scripps College, courses at Fuji Studios in Florence, Italy, a live/work experience in a Balinese village to study ikat and silk weaving.  She has taught fine art and surface design courses since 2002, and currently serves part time on the faculty of Gage Academy of Art and Cornish College of Design, among others.

Jessie Oleson is a triple threat: a writer / illustrator / gallery owner. After attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and working at two stationery companies named after neighborhoods they were not located in geographically, she branched off on her own to start her own business. Going under the alter-ego of CakeSpy, she has a blog where she writes about dessert, and a retail gallery where she sells mostly drawings of desserts. In addition to a weekly column on foodie website Serious Eats, she has also done illustration work for various companies including Microsoft, iPop, All-Mighty, Taylored Expressions, and Taste of Home. She lives in Seattle with her husband, Danny, two pugs, Olive and Porkchop, and a fridge which is always very well stocked with butter.

Artist: Lewis Curtiss Jr., Paint and Collage
Lewis' love of quilts and the fabric pieces they're made from, turned into collage once he realized that beautiful traditional quilt block designs could be interpreted using other materials and methods. Instead of an entire quilt, he chooses to focus on the individual block patterns. Despite the classic geometry of the designs Lewis chooses, the random visual energy of the papers he creates bring a new vision to these classic standards. The longer one looks at a block, the more you see in the visual depths of the texture, forms and colors.

In 1988 Rapoport began a study of Filete Porteño from the masters in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After receiving her BFA degree in 1989
from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, she continued utilizing filete within her paintings and sculptures. Her work has been collected and exhibited in North and South America and Europe, including galleries and museums throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, and New York.  She lives and works in Portland, OR.

Lisa Reynolds is a landscape architect, multi media artist and cyclist (currently carless, even).  Lisa tells us the thing she loves about getting around by bike is all the happy accidents and sites only seen from the seat of a bike.  The works are encaustic layered on ink drawings, and with each piece in the shop she tells a little story.

Artist: Mary Kay Nespeca, Paintings
Born in NY but residing in Seattle these past 26 years, Mary Kay Nespeca has always been drawn to the arts and humanities.  After years of figure drawing, figure painting, figure sculpture, printmaking, letterpress, and photography she discovered encaustic painting through a workshop at Pratt Fine Arts Center.  It was an immediate bond and a most rewarding medium.  Since then she has acquired a studio in Fremont where she makes art and keeps a very fine mess.

~SPECIAL EVENTS~
Acclaimed artist Mimi Allin will be roaming the Fremont neighborhood with her Lamplighter project during October 7th's Fremont First Friday Art Walk.  Inspired by "Le Petit Prince", a novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, she will be carring a 10' rolling lantern and spinning, papier-mâché planetoid (conceived of and constructed by inventor/designer Clinton Lee Bliss), illuminating and extinguishing her lamp once per minute.  Be sure to keep an eye out for this walking art exhibit!

Fremont Felt Mustaches
In honor of the season's ultimate holiday of disguises (Halloween!!!), the Fremont Arts Council will also be hosting a booth at the Lenin statue on art walk night, helping attendees of all ages make felt mustaches of all kinds!  Stop by the Lenin statue (3526 Fremont Pl. N.) between 7pm-8:30pm to join in!!!

Playing off of the philosopher Walter Benjamin’s “dialectical image”, my work addresses the dynamics of biology vs. technology and asks whether there will be a harmony between the two as the gap closes.  Technology is changing the way in which we interpret these age-old perceptions of reality and weaves a new fabric. How will we interact within this new fabric?

¨Casa Marianella is a shelter for undocumented immigrants, mostly from Latin America, in Austin, Texas. The center provides English classes as well as access to medical and legal services. Its sister shelter, Posada Esperanza, provides similar services to homeless families, including education for mothers and children, and family case management. Their goal is to help familes and individuals transition towards more stable and secure lives.  Caroline Planque, who holds a masters in Photojournalism from theUniversity of Texas at Austin, documented the daily lives of individuals at Casa Marianella and Posada Esperanza over the course of several years.

"Recently, I have turned my hands away from fabric and machine stitch to freeform hand-knitting to create three-dimensional abstract fiber works. Inspired by large shapes in nature, such as mountain sides and mima mounds, they are studies of serenity and strength. The softness of the knit structures belies the ruggedness of the hard solids of rocky mountainsides and packed earth of the mounds. Other pieces are brighter and whimsical, using the media to lighten the emotion." - Maki

From early childhood we are given toy cars to play with, thus beginning a life long fascination with the automobile.  In this photo series, the model cars continue to stand-in for the real thing.  The "beau ideal" of the sleek sports car poised on a California cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean calls us to freedom of the open road.  The images in the Night Ride Home part of the series continues the exploration of car culture by focusing on the mood of heading home- satisfied with the day's journey.
Ethan Bickel received a BFA in Printmaking at the Hartford Art School and a Master's in Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design.  One of his earliest memories is the car ride from Cape Cod to his family home in western Massachusetts.  Since moving to Seattle in 1997, Ethan has exhibited his photographs regularly throughout the area.

Artist: Judy Thomas, Ceramics
Thomas received her BA degree in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She initially worked in fiber, then as a Floral Designer, then in concrete before landing in clay. She studies with Carol Gouthro at Kirkland Art Center, and lives on a large property in Woodinville where the garden is her second love.

Martorelli began taking pictures of eyes at the Fremont Market in 1992. Since then, over 5,000 people from around the world have received pictures of their eyes as art. Recently her work has combined Hubble images with iris photos, weaving themes of uniqueness and connectivity.
Ellen’s photos have been displayed at the “VISION” Exhibit at the Pacific Science Center and the Nocturnal Exhibit at the Woodland Park Zoo. They have been spotlighted in the Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Magazine and Ellen has also appeared on “Evening Magazine”.

Originally from the midwest, Jordan Kay is an illustrator and lover of all things nostalgic. Her favorite thing to do is draw whatever is surrounding her. On an average day you'll probably find her listening to Paul & Linda McCartney singing as she's sitting amongst a plethora of collected materials and drawing utensils; making things. She likes to make zines, postcards, sketch and travel. Recently she has been hanging out with a small black kitten named Galaxy The Wolf.
